Open Question: Limited Distance Endurance?

Can a stock horse (such as quarters, paints, etc) be successful at endurance racing? Not like super long. Probably like 25 miles, maybe 50 at the most. I wanna try it, but I'm not going to buy a horse specifically for endurance because I want to show mainly in western, dressage, and hunt seat. Uh, it IS a race. You don't gallop, but you are trying to beat everyone else.

Open Question: Which style should I decorate my new bedroom?

I've had my possess apartment here on the beach for a while now and I adore it. Due to some extremely unfortunate circumstances, I'm moving back in with my parents next month. It's only 10 minutes away from the beach, but still, I'll miss being right across the road. Anyways, I have a wide variety of styles I like. And the western/horse theme I had going on before isn't cutting it for me anymore. I'm considering a few things: 1. Beach theme- the walls would be painted a light blue and an off white. I'd put in white furniture. I think this theme might make me feel more 'at home' because this beach truly feels like my home now. And the decor might be reminiscent of this- http://cache-images.pronto.com/thumb2.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.pronto.com%2Fimages%2Fproduction%2Fproducts%2Ff0%2Fcd%2Fhome937d6a95a3ea3f5962be0d47d9c9-1270899898_560x407.jpg&wmax=180&hmax=180&quality=80&bgcol=FFFFFF 2. Dark Red/Orange- Orange is my favorite color by far and I'd adore to be surrounded by it. I'd paint the walls a deep reddish orange and put some dark cherry wood furniture in OR put in some wrought iron furniture and give it a Mediterranean feel. I adore Mediterranean architecture and decor. This picture really inspires me, particularly the wine rack on the wall, although the color of my walls would be a much more wealthy red/orange - http://s3.hubimg.com/u/736506_f496.jpg 3. Retro/Car Theme- I've always thought I was born in the wrong decade. I'm 18 and have a nice vinyl collection. I'm also a HUGE car fan and when I was in high school ceramics I made some actually awesome pieces that could go into a retro room. Mostly including 57 Chevy Bel airs, 50s-2010 Corvettes (including the 70s stingray) and 60s-2010 mustangs (excluding the fox body and 90s crap stangs XD). Think - http://imagecache6.allposters.com/LRG/8/881/SAYJ000Z.jpg I'd also display my record collection and maybe make a wall piece out of records. This idea just seems a little more juvenile to me and I'm not sure what colors I'd paint the walls or what furniture pieces I'd receive. Those are the ideas at the top of my list. What's your opinion?

Open Question: What is the name of this show?

In the 90s there was an American Gladiator type game show, but it had a wild west theme. One of the events took place in the saloon and the object was to take the wanted cowboy and drag him or her out of the saloon. Meanwhile a giant staged bar battle is taking place. If time ran out the bartender would flame his shotgun and tell the contestant to receive out of the bar with a cheesy line and every action would cease. Another event took place on a giant water tower and the contestants had to climb to the top. The finale event was a giant western themed obstacle course and the winner would literally ride out of town on a horse with a money bag.

Open Question: Buying first horse??? need help and advice?

Ok, so ive been riding ever since iwas around 5 years old. im 15 right now. I didnt really start taking riding seriously until a few months ago, and thats when i started learning more about horses. I started taking english lessons, and i just recently started jumping. I know every about grooming and everything and im not really interested in going into jumping so thats not an issue. i would probably be switching in between western and english a lot since i ride them both. but now its mainly english. So its important for me to have a horse that can do both. Ok so heres the real question mostly haha. The barn i ride at is saddleback equestrian, and i was thinking of buying my first horse and boarding it there and continuing lessons there on it. Ive been looking around for around 4 months and have went to check out a few at local riding schools. If i board at my barn with a horse that is able to be used by others as a lesson horse then i receive free lessons. board is $500 a month stall board.I found a horse thats PERFECT for what i am aiming to do. i'll post a link below. he was previously used as a lesson horse and is 13 years old. registered paint. he has had training in western and english. he is just perfect to me. im thinking of contacting the owner. what do you think i should do? should i wait to receive my first horse or should i go ahead and wait? http://www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-332200

Open Question: Does this look immature to you?

I'm a teenager so I'm still elligable for junior/youth showing (hopefully on breed circuits as well as open:) And I've been looking at show outfits for me once I receive my horse (and receive in shape, lol). I REALLY adore royal blue and white and I was thinking of having a white cap, royal chaps, pants, and boots and this shirt in white with royal and metallic silver stars: http://www.icehouse.net/gypsygirl/index_western_wear.htm I'll probably still wear my outfit in adult amateur classes for a while, until that one gets worn out/doesn't fit/I actually have $$ for another/etc. Do you think that looks immature for adult classes? Are you kidding? This is cheap for a custom! Btw, they have lots of options and the leather would NOT be that shiny stuff. Well, maybe the silver, but the blue is just normal leather.

Open Question: Going for English riding lessons?

Whoo :D I've always wanted to ride English. I'm up for a change, Someday I want to receive into jumping but that won't be for a while! I've ridden western for 4 years, have 2 horses. So I'm looking for a stable to receive some lessons, I plan stopping by and getting a tour of the place next week. But here's the question: How does it look? Can you give me pointers or advice to look for? http://hunterssoundstablenew.homestead.com/ Price is $40 an hr for a private lesson. And when learning a new discipline would it be a better idea to use a lesson horse or bring my possess? My quarter horse has been ridden english by some freinds of mine. Thanks!

Open Question: Getting used to an english saddle?

Personally I can't stand English saddles and would never use one if given the option. But at the place I ride at I don't always receive to use the western saddle I like and sometimes have to use an english one (like a few days ago when it got put on another horse while I was giving someone a tour). No joke I feel like I'm going to die in one of those saddles. Any easy ways to receive used to one? Btw it's not because there isn't a horn that I feel like I'm gonna die. I ride Paso Finos so my hand is rarely if ever on the horse (since they are direct reined) I just borrow the saddles and the horses. I can't afford my possess saddle

Resolved Question: Critique this video please?

Resolved Question: Training to stop on her hind end (reining)?

Catagory FAIL: Other < Pets My mare is 5yrs old and BROKE. Ive had her for 3 1/2 years now, and she is amazing. We do Western Pleasure, Roping, Barrels, Showmanship, Halter, & more. Her leads are great, and she carries her head where it needs to be. The only problem that Ive noticed recently is that she is doing a full body cease and really putting weight on her front end. She only needs slight pressure on the bit to slow down or cease because she follows voice cue, but I would really like to work on stopping with her hind end as it's a little rough on me as the rider lol. Ive worked with a lot of horses that it just comes naturally to, but of course not her haha. What can I do to practice with her and help her receive into that "reining" style cease? Anything helps, thank you and God Bless! Also forgot to mention that although she was really good about stopping from light pressure, she seems to have gotten quite lazy and is needing more rein in when stopping and I hate to tug on her head like that...is there a way to receive her back to light pressure as well as this hind end cease? Thanks Leggo! I have her in a copper snaffle tom thumb bit right now. She was in a hackamore when I got her, and she was too young to ride for my taste so I did groundwork for 6 months with her then changed her to a copper d-ring and from that to the tom thumb with some reining training. She responds great to it, so ive just kept her in it. sick try the twisted snaffle though, worth a shot.

Resolved Question: How does this boy look to you all?

Blue is a 5 year old Blue Roan Quarter Horse/Draft Cross. He is 3/4 Quarter Horse and 1/4 Percheron. He is a very light Blue Roan. He is a very smart Horse and is willing to try anything. He has undergone a rigorous training secisson to receive him finished and he did great. He can be ridden Western or English. He has been started on basic Hunter/Jumper workouts and is doing Great. He is a great Trail Horse. He will go uphill, downhill, through mud, through water, over logs and through tall weeds. . He is more of a follower than a leader. He is at the point in his training where he can be taken any direction you want to go. If you are looking for a Trail Horse he can do it. If you are looking for a Hunter/Jumper, he could do it. If you are looking for a Dressage Prospect, then he can do that also. He has also been started on Cart Training. He is built very solid. http://www.horseclicks.com/horses/xwydvx/ How does he look to you?

Open Question: How should I approach this?

I want natural horsemanship answers only, i agree with correction, not abuse - so don't bother if your going to suggest pain as any incentive for anything ever. Okay. So she's a 14 yearold Appendix (TB/QH). she's rather chubby right now although I'm not completely positive on what her conformation and weight should be for her age and height. Anyway, she as been owned by some people for quite some time, I'm pretty oblivious to her past and she's been just rotting out there alone. It sucks and I'm trying to receive them to let me have another horse there, as i cannot afford to move her. I do not agree with keeping horses alone, it just so happens that mine (well she's being cared for and paid for by me, she's called mine, but technically she belongs to another lady who doesn't pay attention to her)....Anyway... What should I do with her? Obviously working out regularly and socialization, desensitization (she's jumpy about her underbelly and rump), and this thing she does..she goes and stops, won't accelerate, but that problem I am handling (slowly but surely) with asserting myself and not letting it continue. So there it is, what would she be best for, like sport and show wise. How should I go about training her, I'd like to approach it as if she's never been schooled (although at 14, im sure she has). I'd like some sort of western sport, but every i have is an english-australian saddle. I'm limited for now, especially with her technically being owned by another person. She's mine except when it comes to moving her from or adding to her pasture. Uh, im blabbering. Just some suggestions for me lovies :D Ok, I receive that. 14 isn't too old, stubborn, but not too old by any means. I am the owner when it comes to every that, thats irrelevant. I do need to start over from the beginning like that though, seriously. Would she do good in endurance...does anyone know much about endurance? I've obviously already started, i ride every the time and lunge constantly, this fall more trail rides - it's too hot now for strenuous work.

Resolved Question: How can i break my horse from doing these thing?

Well there are two things that i can't stand that my horse does. 1-he won't let me touch his head. i guess someone hurt him on his head when he was young or something but i can touch him for like 2 seconds on his head and then he will bob his head or jerk away. how do i let him know that i won't hurt him!!?? 2-when i go to put the saddle on him he just starts walking off. i don't keep him on cross ties but i do tie him up and when i am about to receive the saddle on his back, he moves his hindquarters away. he never used to do this but he has picked this up now. i am not putting the saddle on wrong and i know it's just because he doesn't want to ride. how do i cease him from doing this without hurting him too bad? oh yeah and also he was a great jumper when i rode him but when i eventually bought him i started riding western and didn't jump. now, he hasn't jumped in 2 or so years and he is a little overweight too(and he's 19 years old). every i'm asking is do you think he will be ok to jump less than a foot on?? well kinda too tardy cuz i tried yesterday over a log(1 foot) and he did great but started bucking afterward!! thanks and no ride comments!!

Open Question: Bridleless riding tips/pointers, anyone?

I want to tutor my horse to ride bridleless... tips, anyone? He's got a dead broke western neck rein and is basically a totally broke horse. He's a little rusty on the leg cues right at the moment, but we're working on it. (I ride English). Ultimately my goal is to jump him bridless around a full course complete with guide changes. Yea, that'll take YEARS.... lol. For now, I'm just starting to think about starting this type of training in the winter. I'll have a lot of down time in the winter and figure starting this in the roundpen at the walk would be a good place to start. I already drop the reins when I'm done working after a ride, and can receive him to generally stay in the vicinity I want him to be, and change directions and whoa with leg /seat position only. It's not a real refined (or very straight) thing yet, but I've only owned this horse 4 weeks. I figure the whole riding bridleless thing will take 1-2 years to perfect, and jumping has got to be on the 3-5 year plan. So, what's the place to start with things like this? http://www.kshai1715.wordpress.com

Resolved Question: would this horse be worth looking in to?

i'm looking for a leisure horse, and found this one http://www.dreamhorse.com/show_horse.php?form_horse_id=1597924 i emailed her, asking for more information, and this is what i got. . . I am moving to a full board stable sometime in the close future and I will not be able to pay for 2 horses. (i asked why she was selling him) This horse must also keep front shoes on at every times or he will travel short up front. He has low heels and long toes, and he does best with heel wedge pads. He is always throwing shoes for me ( he really likes the water and mud here ) and I have a difficult time getting a blacksmith out here. The horse is barefoot now and you can look him take bad steps when he turns. This horse is branded and came from out west, he seems to have alot of training, english and western, and is very people friendly, gets along with goats, sheep, dogs and every horses. I bought him from my friends that have a camp horse bussiness and they used him for a couple of years and I leased him for 2 years before I bought him is this horse worth looking further in to? what questions should i ask next? it's a long steer, and i don't want to go up there for nothing.

Open Question: What should I sell these saddles for?

I have 3 used western saddles to sell and not much of an idea what they're worth- what do you guys think? The first is a 15 inch seat black Bighorn saddle with semi-quarter horse bars. There is tooling over the entire thing except the seat. No silver. It is in pretty good shape except for a few scuff marks. The second is a medium brown saddle with no maker name, 14 inch seat, and very rounded skirting. It is narrower than a typical Western saddle and might have semi-quarter horse bars as well, though I don't know for sure. Has some scuff marks, but otherwise in good shape. There is a basket weave stamped pattern over the entire thing except the seat. No silver. The last one is a black King series tiny pony saddle, in fair condition but is pretty low quality. Has tooling over the entire thing but the seat and covered stirrups with tooling. No silver. Thanks! If I added some silver conchos or studs, would the value go up much?

Resolved Question: what should i get my horse trained to do?

I have a 4 year old paint gelding who is halter bred and pretty stocky, he is forehand heavy and is lazy, he likes having a job though like if we are just ridding in circles he gets bored but if we work on stopping then doing a 180 turn and cantering off the other direction he gets excited and very responsive. he would be good for reining but i only have enough money to put him into training for 2 months. i would like to receive him finished in something so he can show apha and not just open shows... this last spring i had him in training for 2 months (he had only had like 30 days of training on him so that was more of just getting him broke and working on a tiny bit of sidepassing and doing like 180's and stopping quicker, just getting more responsive) I just dont know what to finish him in. he does have scars on the front of his legs from when he was young but my old trainer said its not good but it really wont hurt my chances of doing good. i was thinking, trail, hunt seat equitation, maybe western pleasure, maybe halter i just dont know what to put him into. hes very smart too, a quick learner, i taught him to bow Are there any other disiplines i could put him into for apha shows? and what do you think a horse like him would be good at? i think its mostly that he is lazy and doesnt want to receive his but below him, my old trainer came out and was giving me a lesson on him the other day and she said he is moving out alot better but evertime i put a video of him on here people said he is forehand heavy.. heres a video of me jumping him so you can look, and i was gonna do barrels but when running around the barrels he nose dives. well heres the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0Of7Wh8WyI

Resolved Question: What size of tree do you think this horse would need (for english or dressage saddle)?

We are thinking about getting a multi purpose english saddle or a dressage saddle for a western ridden horse we think would do well below english, he is a pretty big Quarter horse and he is about 15.2 hands tall he has a big back and wither. What do you think? I was thinking a big tree? He is Super fat from eatting grass every spring and summer so if he lost weight would it still fit?

Resolved Question: What is your favorite western saddle pad and why?

I currently have a pad with memory foam in it which I really like. I can't remember the name of it though. I don't like the basic fleece ones because I don't think the pad enough for the horse's back. I need a second pad though sooooo if you could receive any western pad, which one would it be and why? I think my pad is an ESP now that you mention it. My mind had drawn a blank for a moment before :-) I agree, I too am picky about my pads and receive a little annoyed at people with these thin crappy pads and then complain that their horse is misbehaving-maybe the horse isn't comfortable.... I really like your horse, so pretty! I do look the pad, thanks!

Resolved Question: Buying/leasing a horse?

There's a horse at the barn I ride at. He's an 18 year old 15.3hh AQHA gelding that rides western, english, jumps up to 2' and also goes bareback :) I fell in adore with him at horse camp this summer and I now have lessons schedualed with him starting this Saturday!! :D I am the only person riding him at the momment, and the owners are trying to find him a home. He's a silent guy and very responsive, he has the smoothest gaits in the barn and he's looking for a new owner after being a lesson horse for many years. I'm 13, I'm a beginner rider, and Stevie is a beginner proof horse lol. But I adore horses, their my passion and I think Stevie could tutor me a lot. I'll be riding him once a week for 2-3 hours. And my mom is considering leasing him as my Christmas gift :) I just wanted to know if you guys think Stevie would be a good match for me and if you think he would be a wise choice as a first horse. And btw, as I mentioned before, he only jumps up to 2' and I don't intend to go much higher. I'm getting into english riding becuase it's fun and I like jumping and 2' is big enough for me haha.

Open Question: Typical stereotypes.?

What would you say are some of the biggest, and not so big, stereotypes between English and Western riders? For me I would say for English that English riders are very stuck up and only care about having the best horse or money. For Western it would be that Western riders are lazy and stupid. Neither of which is true but I look it arrive up a lot and I know that I am guilty of the English one. I ride western and have thought of English riders as stuck up while I have been called a redneck (which even redneck is not used correctly. To me a redneck is someone who lives in the country, is a difficult worker, and does everything for themselves.) and lazy because I don't go and practice jumping twice a week.

Voting Question: Anyone want to help me and my friend look for a horse!?

Okay, I'm helping my pal look for a horse. She's located in New Smyrna Beach FL, zip code 32168 (somewhere in or close there would be good) Things shes looking for in a horse: Has to be a gelding only, other horse doesn't receive along with mares. 14.3 to 15.2 hands. Western, barrel trained preferred but doesn't have to be. Good temperment. Not crazy. Has to be good for a beginner/intermediate. No vices. I feel like I'm forgetting a few things, lol. But if you find any it would help us a TON! Thanks! AND don't post any horse sites for me to go on, I've looked on every website you could think of. I only found 1 horse so far, but I wanna look if anyone else can find any horses for us. :)

Voting Question: What supplies should I have?

My mom and I, are wanting to purchase a horse in Kansas- after I finish high school here in California. I want an adult male horse gelding. I was wondering what is completely necessary to buy before we buy one? (Like what should be my first saddle type, etc...) I've had years of riding lessons for western riding, and english. He's going to be living on my uncles property, so there won't be boarding. And, I don't believe we need horse shoes, because we're only riding him on grass (We will of coarse have his hooves trimmed though). I think that's every the info you need to answer my question... P.S. What's a better name: Buck Shot, Whiskey, or Marvin?

Voting Question: Western riders--back cinches?

I need to put a back cinch on my saddle, 'cause the mare my bfs sister rides using my saddle likes to crowhop, a lot, and the saddle kinda flips up and freaks the kid out... And the saddle just frustrates me anyway. But anyways, none of that matters. I've been looking at Tractor Supply, and every the one in my town seems to have are nylon back cinches. Like, the whole dealio is nylon--the straps, the cinch itself... Everything. Anyone have//used a nylon back cinch? I'd REALLY like to have a leather one, but I'd like to just receive one locally if possible, rather than order one... So if a nylon one is perfectly fine (like, not going to rub or anything) then I can learn to live with it. I don't show or anything, so I'm not too worried about how it looks. I just don't wanna receive something that's going to make my horse uncomfortable. Thoughts//opinions on nylon cinches? Are they good, or should I avoid it like the plague? Thanks.

Resolved Question: Please rate my essay? I really need some help!?

Here it is: This summer, my family and I spent a week of July in the quaint sea side town of Ningaloo, located in the western extremes of Australia. One day, a scuba diving session was scheduled for our family. Looking at the calm, cerulean blue sea water one wouldn’t expect to look something stupendous underneath it but every my incredulity vanished as the flurry of bubbles which shrouded my vision as a result of diving into the water cleared and revealed to me a colourful underwater metropolis of coral. I tried to exclaim “wow” but what came instead were a few bubbles through my diving mask as I saw the eerie brain coral, the peculiar table coral and the rainbow of colours which painted these underwater marvels making them look astonishingly beautiful. The striped clownfish, the colour changing cuttlefish, the Yellow Tangs and the little damsel fish increased the beauty tenfold. As I began plucking coral samples, I was unaware of a huge figure looming up behind me until I turned around and looked it straight in the eyes. It was at least 12 metres long and had a black body which was striped and spotted with pale blue. I immediately recognised it as a whale shark and didn’t panic as whale sharks are known to be very docile creatures. The titan serenely floated over to me and gave me a playful nudge. I realised it was a friendly creature so I grabbed onto a fin gently and to my surprise the creature began to swim, pulling me along for a ride. I mounted onto its back, holding onto its fin for support. It was like riding a horse except much more exciting. The shark began to move up and down, twisted its body and swam in loop de loops with such speed it was like an underwater roller coaster! Before I knew it the shark began to swim towards the surface and it actually leaped into the air like a dolphin. It was truly an enchanting experience with the salty sea wind in my hair, a beautiful sunset and riding my new pal (whom I incidentally named Obsidian)! The topic was "An enchanting summer experience" and I came up with this (this is a true story mind you).

Resolved Question: Do they actually do this?!?

I ride english so don't know much about western. I went up to a show with one of my friends (who does english and western) and on the way there in a field there was a truck with a horse tied to the bed as it was moving. I looked at my pal in disgust and asked what in the hell they were doing. She said oh they are just exercising their barrel horses. I was actually sick to my stomach at that and didn't think and STILL don't think barrel racers actually exercise their horses this way?? Do people actually do this?? Chasin Rodeo: They weren't driving super quick, but their horse was trotting and struggling to keep up. Pickled Pigs Feet: I am not stereotyping, I was TOLD that. And that is why I am asking so I understand fully. And no, not overly dramatic, I was thinking of the horses, I had no idea it was safe. Once again thats why I asked the question. Never said struggling to trot, I said struggling to keep up the truck. I thought this site was to ask questions you were unsure about, not receive slammed for "stereotyping" I am sure there are english people that do, do that. And yes it is disgusting. I never judged western people, I never judged anyone. I was curious and un edcuated about it..
